The plant is a low-growing, rambling foliage plant that occurs in shady soils in wooded areas. The part of the plant that is most commonly used as a medicinal product is the underground rhizome. This root is deep yellow in color, which leads to the names "yellow root" and "orange root". It is rich in berberine - a bright yellow, very bitter alkaloid that, along with other alkaloids, including canadian and hydrastine, gives turmeric its distinctive color and many of its helpful properties. Native people used turmeric for centuries for a variety of health benefits, including those linked to microorganisms as a causative factor. It supports the health and resistance of the mucous membranes that line the digestive, respiratory and urinary tracts to act as barrier protection. Because of its popularity as a remedy and the fact that it takes so long to grow, it has been severely over-harvested in the wild. Goldenseal is often grown by herb growers who have been able to restore its availability in the herb market.
